West of Scotland’s Christmas Cracker!
Christmas comes but once a year, but this year, cat shows came twice for the West of Scotland Cat Club. The 2004-5 Show was held in January, so the show we held on 3 December was the club’s second of the year.
We thought the entry might be lower because we had two shows in one year, but in fact the show had a bumper entry. There were cats returning in triumph from the Supreme, there were lots of debutantes, the range of breeds on show included new breeds such as Sphynxes and LaPerms in the 17 exhibition pens. And of course, there were some great household pets.
On the subject of debutantes, the show marked the first appearance of Scotland’s newest judge, Miss Pamela Read, recently confirmed as a full judge of Burmese and the first show as managers for Ian and Caroline Thomson.
There were absences too. This was the first show since we lost Dougie Taylor, our Hall Manager at the last show – and so many others – and his ebullient presence was much missed.
We couldn’t let the December date go unremarked and used the occasion to kick off the festive season with all the trimmings. The hall was decked in Christmas colours. Red, gold and green were everywhere and the Club chose special rosettes to reflect the mood of the season. The judges, stewards and the committee wore Christmas hats and badges as well as their usual badges of office. Word obviously got round that Christmas had come early to the John Wright Sports Centre, because Santa Claus stopped off for his first appearance of the season. He came in around lunch and sat under our Christmas tree, giving presents to children and dispensing goodwill to everyone. In the process, we managed to raise funds for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) at Robin House near Loch Lomond, the second hospice in Scotland exclusively for children, which opened summer 2005.
But cat shows are first and foremost about celebrating cats and with an increased entry, there was a lot to celebrate. Choosing the best in each section was all the harder. The cats that made it were
Gr. Ch. & Gr. Pr. Starspangle Bedazzled (Persian)
Ch Adtrelo Hollygram Moses (Semi Longhair)
Gr. Pr. Rocadanne Rob Roy (BSH)
Ch. Madison Superstar (Foreign)
UK Gr. Ch. & Gr. Pr. Cobatel Moondance (Burmese)
Trelgandorf Del Amitri (Oriental)
Gr. Ch. Drestothril Daktari (Siamese)
Kizzy (Household Pet)
And of those, Daktari was chosen as overall Best in Show Pedigree. Kizzy was our Best in Show Household Pet, a two-year old tortie and white at her first ever show. At least, we think it was her first show – we can’t remember ever having a three-legged exhibit at a show before!
The winners received £100 and £50 respectively, as well as lots of goodies donated by Hill’s, Vitalin, Snowflake, Royal Canin and MPM. As befits Christmas, no-one went home empty handed, as goodies from Royal Canin, Hill’s and Vitalin were also supplied for each pen. BIS was decided, a terrific raffle was drawn, it only remained to pack up and go home and we did, with our Christmas rosettes pinned to our cat carriers, taking the Christmas spirit out into the dark and cold with us.
